FAQ Regarding Replacement Windows:

1. Do I need a replacement window?
Condensation, leaking, drafts, hazy glass, warped and rotted wood, high energy bills, and difficulty opening and closing your windows are all sure signs that it's time to consider window replacement.

2. What exactly is a replacement window?
Your home’s original windows can be replaced by new windows with aluminum, wood or vinyl frames. Vinyl windows are the most popular choice as homeowners become more educated about vinyl's outstanding value, performance and maintenance advantages.

Long-lasting beauty, low maintenance and excellent thermal efficiency ratings give vinyl windows a winning edge over other types of replacement windows. Patio Enclosures, Inc. ComfortShield windows are manufactured from solid virgin vinyl, which means they will never pit, crack, peel, fade or require painting. Vinyl is a natural insulator that adds to the energy efficiency of the windows. Vinyl will not swell, rot or be infested by insects.

4. There are so many types of glass, how do I select what’s right for my home?
Glass has come a long way from the single pane glass windows with storms that our parents had! Insulating glass improves the quality windows by:

  • Improving the performance of the U value of your new windows
  • Reducing condensation
  • Helping retain the heat in winter
  • During summer, assisting in deferring heat and retaining cooler air

All Patio Enclosures ComfortShield windows are manufactured with PPG’s Solarban® 60 low-E glass with Argon Gas filling and utilize Warm Edge spacers….all designed to increase your window’s efficiency.

Our exclusive Comfort-Gard® Plus (standard on ComfortShield® Plus and ComfortShield® Elite) combines the most effective energy-efficient components to produce the best insulated glass available.

Our design consultants can demonstrate the advantages of each of the three window products we offer.

5. What is Argon filled insulated glass and how does it work? Is Argon dangerous?
Insulated glass refers to glass that uses air between panes as a primary source of insulation. Although air itself is a good insulator, filling the space with low-conductivity Argon gas further reduces heat transfer improving the window’s thermal efficiency. Colorless, odorless, non-flammable, non-reactive, Argon gas is 1.4 times denser than air and completely safe, non-toxic and noncombustible.

6. Do replacement windows really pay for themselves?
High-quality, energy-efficient windows such as Patio Enclosures Comfort Shield windows really will pay for themselves. Savings will vary, but well-engineered and quality-built windows lower home energy consumption. The energy and maintenance savings will allow you to recoup your window investment over time.

7. How do you select the window efficiency?
The National Fenestration Rating Council is an organization providing product ratings for the window industry. Entire window performance is measured by U-factor. The lower the U-factor, the better the insulating quality of the window. Your Patio Enclosures Design Consultant will be happy to detail U-factor for the specific window style you are considering.

8. What is Solarban® 60?
Solarban 60 is PPG’s premier, energy efficient Low-E glass. A microscopic coating reflects heat toward its source – outside in summer months, and inside in the winter. The result is a more comfortable home year round. Without darkening your room, it also blocks UV rays (preventing fading of furniture, carpet and paint) while allowing visible light through.

9. What is a Warm Edge spacer?
Warm edge refers to the type of spacer material used to separate the panes of glass in an insulated window unit. If the material conducts less heat or cold than a conventional aluminum spacer at the edge of the glass, it is said to be ‘warm edge.’ The warm edge spacer affects heat retention and loss, condensation on the windows, and the amount of noise that is transmitted. Best of all, the warm edge spacer reduces your energy costs.

PPG’s Intercept® system in our ComfortShield® Value windows resists spacer movement leading to seal failure (fogging between panes) and creates an effective thermal barrier to help reduce conducted heat loss through the window.

Our ComfortShield® Plus and ComfortShield® Elite models incorporate Edgetech’s patented Super Spacer®, made of structural non-metallic foam with millions of tiny insulating air pockets. Because it is 950 times less conductive than aluminum spacers, Super Spacer increases the overall efficiency of insulating glass by as much as 30%.

10. What does Energy Star certified mean in regards to windows?
Energy Star is a special program created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy to identify energy-saving products. All Patio Enclosure windows carry the Energy Star certification labels. To qualify, products must be 40% more efficient than common building codes, and reduce energy bills by at least 15%.

11. What about the warranty?
You will be well protected by our Limited Lifetime Warranty. In addition, our ComfortShield® Plus and ComfortShield® Elite windows come with a Lifetime Glass Breakage Warranty.

12. How much time will it take to have my windows manufactured and installed?
Patio Enclosure’s windows are custom manufactured specifically for the openings of the windows for your home. Therefore it does take some time to manufacture them for installation. Depending on your location, it is usually a matter of weeks before the new windows are ready. An average home takes one day to completely install the finished windows. Of course this depends on the specific installation and the number of windows you have.

13. Will it be easy to clean my new windows?
Our ComfortShield windows are designed to make cleaning a snap. The windows easily tilt into your home so you can clean the sashes. If you choose to have grids with your windows, the grids will be installed in-between the glass making cleaning easier.
